Belfast Harlequins started the brightest in a intrigueing game at Cloonacauneen Park.The visitors were all fired up and running great lines and looked like blowing the home side away but great defence by the Corinthian back line especially centres Wayne Williams and Under 21’s grand slam winner Eoin Griffen kept them at bay.
Quins were first on the score board after the home side were penalized for killing the ball outhalf Keith Pyper converted same.Corinthians eventually got into an attacking position with a good scrum on Quins twenty five and under twenty ones scrum half Eric Flynn getting the ball out for fullback Darren Classens to come into the line and get the touchdown with outhalf Shane Mulally converting same.
From the kick off the visitors fullback Miles O Hagan was penalized for an infringement Mulally again converted same.After twenty minutes into the game the Belfast side put pressure on Corinthians who conceded another penalty Pyper stepped up to convert same leaving the home team still leading by ten points to six.Corinthians really had a purple patch in the last fifteen minutes of the first half with the home side turning over great ball for captain Pat Cunningham to set up a ruck and hooker Karl Egan coming in for a great ball off scrumhalf Flynn to touch down out wide Mulally again converted same.Again the home side were to the fore with fine play by front rows Denis Buckley and David Small and getting the ball out wide to winger James Buckley to touch down in the corner leaving the score at the break Corinthians twenty two Quins six.
When the second half started Corinthians were looking for the forth try and bonus point but Quins had other ideas they really threw everything but the kitchen sink at the home side with another under 21’s grand slam player hooker Niall Annett and Quins captain second row Neil McComb trying there dambest to get the upper hand on the home side.The visitors eventually got there try after ex Irish player and coach of Harlequins Andy Ward came in as a replacement to touch down far out Pyper was unable to convert same. It was nip and tuck for the rest of the final half with referee Seamus Flannery calling time with neither side unable to add to there tally leaving Corinthians winners by twenty two points to eleven.
Corinthians final game is away to DLSP next week end 10/4/10.
