Corinthian U 13’s had their first competitive outing against Galwegians at Glenina. This was the team’s first experience of playing 15-a-side rugby on a full sized pitch, and they claimed a sweet victory, running in 5 tries in the process. The gods smiled on this willing team of warriors, with the heavy rain of earlier morning breaking to give sunshine for the duration of the game. The wet underfoot conditions did little to hold back both teams from playing good, open running rugby. The quality of tackling, passing and straight running from Corinthians was very impressive, and they kept a good shape throughout.

Trys were scored by Maitis O’Griofa, Liam Costello (2 trys), Barry O’Shea, Gary Collumb, but the win was down to a great team effort. All of the U13 panel who were available (28 players on the day) got to play. From this week onwards Corinthians will have a 2nd team in the league due to increased numbers as the weeks have gone on. This will mean plenty of match time for all the players!

Last Saturday Corinthians were away to Galwegians Black in their second league game of the season.

Corinthians started the better of the two sides, gathering from the kick off and from the first ruck Ronan Joyce broke on the blind side and was stopped just short of the line. Corinthians kept up the pressure and moved the ball infield to again be stopped just short. From the ruck this time Brendan McGath spotted a gap and went over for the first unconverted try of the game.

Galwegians responded immediately from the kickoff and worked their way up the field to score a breakaway try. After some up and down play from both sides Galwegians added a converted try before the break after an intercept in mid field to score under the posts.

In the second half Corinthians regrouped and made a number of raids into the Galwegians half but could not take advantage of the strong wind to add to their first half tally.
Galwegians finished stronger and due to some missed tackles in mid field ran in 3 more tries before the end – two of which were converted.

Despite the one sided 5 – 31 scoreline Corinthians matched Galwegians in the scrums and lineouts with the backs moving the ball with conviction at times but unfortunately could not gain enough of an upper hand to get back into the game particularly in the second half.

Sunday Nov 6 2011: Buccaneers 0, Corinthians 16
The under 17s made hard work of the game in the first half. Resolute defence near the Buccaneers line held the score to just 3 nil at the break. Our forwards pushed further beyond the gain line in the second half, opening the game for more expansive back play. The only try of the game came late. Several phases of pick and go attack drew in the Buccs defence allowing the backs to work the ball wide to Ben Creaven who touched down in the corner. Scoring: Ben Creaven: 3 penalties, 1 try, 1 conversion.
