Corinthians 2nd XV capped off a fantastic weekend for the senior squad following a 20 points to 15 victory away to Castlebar on Sunday. Both sides started with real intent despite the dreadful weather conditions. However, it was Corinthians who drew first blood. The Galway side managed to get good field position and following a maul close to the homesides line, loosehead Brendan Barrett rumbled over from 2 yards. Eric Flynn slotted the extras. Castlebar had an opportunity to reduce the deficit but outhalf Robert Cussack’s attempt was just wide.Shortly afterwards, Corinthians regained the initiative and following some excellent interplay betwwen the forwards and backs, scrum-half Kieran Marmion fed full-back David Panter whoose “chip-ahead” was superbly gathered by the flying Jack Campbell who outpaced the covering defence to touch down for the visitors second try. Once again, Flynn converted.
Thereafter, the home side tested the Corinthians defence but were unable to find a breach in the line and had to be content with two penalty goals, courtesy of the boot of Cussack. Indeed, it was the visitors who finished the half on a high. The impressive Flynn nudged over a three-pointer following a break out of defence by the industrious number 8 Kevin O’Byrne who linked with his hard-working backrowers, Conor Hastings and Mark Byrne. Castlebar conceded a penalty from the ensuing ruck and Flynn made them pay, leaving the score 17 to 6 at half-time.Unfortunately, the second-half failed to fire. Both sides struggled, without success, to come to terms with the referee’s interpretation of the beakdown and as result became increasingly frustrated as the half wore on. Nevertheless, great credit must go to the Corinthian defensive effort who kept a clean sheet and denied a battling Castlebar any clear cut try-scoring opportunity. To be fair to the homeside, they continued to fight on and were rewarded on the stroke of full time with a further penalty from Cussack which guarenteed the homeside a losing bonus point. The Cloonacuaneen lads worked incredibly hard for oneanother and the result and preformance backed up the previous weeks efforts which is extremely pleasing for all concerned.
They face Westport at home next Sunday.
